Hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) [1] has been described as a useful alternative to reversed-phase chromatography for polar compounds that not are retained on conventional C18 columns. In the HILIC mode of separation, a mixture of organic and aqueous solvents are used as mobile phase in combination with polar stationary phases [2-4], such as ion exchange, amino, silica, diol, zwitterion to obtain retention of highly polar compounds. Silica columns intended for HILIC are commercially available and provided by several manufacturers. Most applications using a silica column reported recently were separation of polar basic compounds. In this study, the retention and separation of acidic compounds were evaluated.
