IR spectroscopy has been widely used in the characterization of countless materials. However, spatial resolution has been restricted by the diffraction limit. In practical terms, transmission FT-IR was restricted to about three times the wavelength of the IR radiation and even ATR will only achieve resolution approaching the wavelength.
