Mass spectrometry (MS) permits to read out molecular information from tissue samples (fig. 1) such as patient biopsies. Using MALDI-TOF MS, even molecular images from histological sections can be generated at an image resolution today that approaches the single cell level. New technologies are the foundation for the use of MALDI Imaging MS (IMS) in many applications including biomedical and clinical research. High definition molecular imaging of proteins in tissue sections can significantly contribute to the understanding of biological processes.
