Call for Papers: Global Challenges Special Issue on Interdisciplinary Research and Impact

Global Challenges is inviting papers for a Special Issue on Interdisciplinary Research and Impact. If you are interested, please submit your abstract to MSDI-GCSpecialissue@monash.edu by May 31, 2017.

You are invited to contribute a paper to the special issue Interdisciplinary Research and Impact in the open access journal Global Challenges co-edited by Prof. Rebekah Brown and Dr. Lara Werbeloff from Monash Universtiy, Melbourne, Australia.

Objective

Interdisciplinary research collaborations are essential to effectively address global sustainability challenges. The aim of this Special Issue is to explore cutting-edge interdisciplinary research efforts across a range of sectors, in order to understand how interdisciplinary research collaborations are being operationalised and how they are delivering impact.

The Special Issue will profile and examine interdisciplinary collaborations across HASS and STEM faculties and explore how these initiatives are being organised, implemented and having an impact across the sectors of energy, climate change, water, global health and food, agriculture and nutrition.

The implications for policy and practice should also be discussed.

Recommended Topics

To fulfill the purpose of the Special Issue, papers are sought on two broad areas.

1 – Operationalising interdisciplinary research collaborations

Papers within this theme should explore interdisciplinary collaborations across HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) disciplines. Papers should take a pragmatic approach and examine what has worked or not worked in these collaborations and why. The goal is to understand what structures, processes or tools can assist in operationalising successful interdisciplinary collaborations. Potential topics include:

How to establish interdisciplinary collaborations? What is needed?

What structures, processes or tools can support interdisciplinary collaboration?

What are the pitfalls in establishing interdisciplinary collaborations?

Teaching interdisciplinarity in higher education

Building the capacity of researchers to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration.

2 – The impact of interdisciplinary research

Papers within this theme should explore how interdisciplinary research across the HASS and STEM disciplines is delivering impact across the following sectors:

  • Energy;
  • Climate Change;
  • Water;
  • Global Health; and
  • Food, Agriculture and Nutrition.

Papers should include discussion and evaluation of the methods and mechanisms for translating research findings into policy and practice.

Submission Requirements

The deadline for the extended abstract submission (800 words maximum) is 31 May 2017. Please adhere to the Global Challenges Author Guidelines when preparing your submission. The article processing charges will be waived for submissions to this special issue.

All submissions should be sent to MSDI-GCSpecialissue@monash.edu
