Just as efficient as analytical columns
In a recently published study, Hetzel et al. were able to prove that Micro-LC columns with an internal diameter of 300µm exhibit the same separating efficiency as classic HPLC-columns with an internal diameter of between 2.1mm and 4.6 mm. A long standing preconception that Micro-LC columns cannot be as well packed as the classic HPLC-columns could therefore be considered null and void. Having said that, critical system volumes that contribute to band broadening outside the separating column do have to be drastically reduced.
